The Mikwanedun Audisookon Center, also known as the Center for Art and Wellness, is a 15,000 square foot facility in South Minneapolis. This initiative by the Indigenous Peoples Task Force (IPTF) integrates cultural wellness practices with sustainable building technologies. The center combines natural materials like timber and compressed earth blocks with green building systems and daylighting to create a healing urban environment (mysite) (Archinect).
The center will serve multiple purposes, including a commercial kitchen, a café featuring Native American foods, and a training site for residents and individuals with disabilities. Additionally, it will host a studio and workshop for traditional arts and crafts (Circle News). The goal is to enhance IPTF’s programming, such as HIV education, prevention, and case management services, while expanding opportunities in the green economy, arts, and entrepreneurship for the Native community (Circle News) (Minnesota House).
This project is funded through a mix of New Market Tax Credits, loans, contributions from tribal nations, foundations, corporations, and public funding from state and local governments (Circle News). The center is dedicated to preserving indigenous culture and promoting environmental sustainability.
